Buraco Das Araras
Bonito, Brazil, 2017
A red-and-green macaw takes flight at Buraco Das Araras. Put a 330' deep sinkhole in the middle of lush forest. Fill it with a diverse collection of wildlife that includes armadillos, coatis, anteaters, foxes, caiman, and some 130 bird species. Add 100 colorful macaws soaring across the chasm - their calls reverberating off the hole's limestone walls - and you get Buraco Das Araras. Visiting Buraco Das Araras is a visceral experience. Loud and colorful, it's a good place to photograph macaws and an excellent spot to immerse yourself in the call of the wild. We visited in breeding season, which is a good time to go.
