Camel Herder

Boudnib, Morocco, 2006

A portrait of a camel herder taken in Boudnib, Morocco during our first trans-Africa overland trip. In the background, Betty, our 80 Series Land Cruiser, takes a breather after a long drive though dusty desert. This photo is one of the many examples of what we've come to know as the 'Extraordinary In-between.' The term we use to describe the experiences we happen upon. Experiences that are well beyond the pages of our guide books or popular travel destinations.

We met this camel herder while exploring the desert pistes that run near the Algeria border. It was late in the day and Sheri and I were stopped by the road to check directions when he passed with his herd of camels in tow. He was headed home and we were headed for Meski, our home for the night. We were both in a hurry and with night approaching we spent less than an hour together. Far too little to understand each others myriad differences but long enough to share a mutual curiosity about each others lives.
