On the Run
Kamanjab, Namiba, 2007
A cheetah rescued by a conservationist after being labeled a problem by local farmers. Large numbers of cheetahs have been poisoned, trapped, or shot by Namibian farmers for killing livestock. It's an ongoing issue threatening Namibia's cheetahs. Conservation groups, including the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), are using everything from relocation to dogs in attempts to ease tension between cheetahs and farmers. Globally, the cheetah population is declining fast, putting cheetahs at risk of extinction. According to the IUCN Red List, the current population is approx. 6,700. As comparison, CCF lists the population in 1900 at 100,000.
