Cane Toad
Brownsberg Reserve, Suriname, 2017
While the prospect of seeing jaguars, white faced saki monkeys, tamarins and other mammals inspired us to explore South America's magnificent rainforests, it was the endlessly fascinating mix of birds and reptiles that punctuated three uncomfortable but interesting months of travel through the hot, humid, and buggy forests of Brazil and the Guianas. I took this photo in Suriname's primate rich Brownsberg Reserve. It's a picture of an unsettlingly large cane toad, which I nearly stepped on, while observing a surprisingly punctual tarantula that wandered into our camp nightly at 7pm. Just two examples of the abundant wildlife that kept us company during our journey.
