The Waterhole
Etosha National Park, Namibia, 2016
While we were observing waterbirds, these lions sauntered down to Klein Namutoni waterhole for a drink. Their arrival was perfectly timed with the warm late afternoon light. I like the intense gaze given off by the lion on the right.
So what's peaking her interest? A pelican, just out-of-frame, is swimming past. Sheri and I wonder if prey strut past predators simply to taunt them. The pelican was treading that fine line - just close enough to tempt the lioness and just far enough to avoid an attack. In human terms, it's the equivalent of sitting at the conveyor belt in a sushi restaurant without a credit card.
